Mobile Unfriendly Website Design
I stumbled upon a website this morning while researching dermal fillers for a small line above my lip. Using Google search I typed in fillers and an advertisement came up for dermal fillers. Using my mobile phone, I clicked on the link to visit the Calabasas spa’s website and the print was really small. (see mobile unfriendly 1)
Skipping the tiny text I moved down the page to before and after photographs. As you might suspect the pictures were very small. I zoomed in on a picture (see mobile unfriendly 2).
Now, to read text describing the procedure I had to scroll back and forth every couple of words (see mobile unfriendly 3).
This is the point when I normally leave a website. Normally, I would return to Google and repeat the search to find a mobile friendly website.
Most visitor conscience companies have websites designed for multiple screen sizes and resolutions or websites designed specifically for mobile users. (Elementary…you would think) After all 55% of all time spent with online retail occurred on a mobile device, finds web and mobile measurement firm comScore. Specifically, smartphones accounted for 44% of retail Internet minutes while tablets accounted for 11%, comScore says.
“Since U.S. consumers now spend more than half of their time on retailers’ web sites using their smartphones and tablets, mobile can’t be viewed simply as an ancillary device or action, it now epitomizes how consumers think and act when they interact with retailers,” Shop.org executive director Vicki Cantrell
Shop.org is the National Retail Federation’s online division. “Retailers have to continue to invest to make sure they get their mobile offerings right, or will increasingly risk alienating customers and leaving significant money on the table.”
Why force mobile users to navigate an un-friendly website?
Curious as to why a high profit business in the thriving beauty industry would be unaware of the need for a mobile friendly website I visited the site on a desktop. Aha! There it is at the bottom of the site, website design by a printing and graphic design company. Hiring a graphic designer to create your website may sound like a good idea but it’s like hiring an interior designer to build your house. Can you imagine? The site looked okay on a full size screen, nothing glaringly wrong, but there were 38 code validation errors and every error could potentially cause a different problem for visitors, costing them valuable clients. When a company is spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on Google Adwords this is unacceptable. Not only are they losing what could be hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue but they’re depleting their advertising budget. You can take a look at what a properly developed website looks like on a mobile website at https://ppc.InternetMarketConsulting.com.
This isn't the end of the story...
I wanted more information so I submitted their form and displayed at the top of the screen, a PHP error.
Even the most stunning website design is irrelevant if unseen. This isn’t a field of dreams! If you build it they won’t come. Websites must be developed, from the ground up, with marketing in mind by a company knowledgeable in website design, search engine optimization, marketing, and advertising. A properly optimized landing page lowers your cost per click maximizing your advertising budget. A well-managed advertising campaign can further stretch your advertising budget by ensuring that you are bidding on the keyword phrases that are targeting the right audience for your business. Not too broad, not too narrow.
